Gurez Valley

A remote border valley of wooden villages, the Kishanganga river and Habba Khatoon peak.

Best time: May to September Altitude: 2,400 m 123 km (about 5 hours) from Srinagar
Gurez sits north of the Razdan Pass, close to the Line of Control, and feels genuinely apart from the rest of Kashmir. The villages are built in timber, the language spoken is Shina, and the Kishanganga runs green through the middle of it.

The road is open roughly May to October and permits can be required. It suits travellers who want somewhere still largely untouched by tourism and do not mind a long drive to reach it.
