Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m in a bowl of meadow ringed by pine and, above that, snow. In summer it is green and open, good for walking and for the gondola up towards Apharwat. In winter it becomes a genuine ski destination — the terrain is real, the season runs roughly January to March, and the second phase of the gondola reaches almost 4,000 m.

Day trips from Srinagar are common but rushed. If skiing or the higher gondola phase matters to you, stay the night.
